Interdisciplinary project marking the 150th birthday of TUM alumnus Thomas Mann

To mark the Thomas Mann Year (the 150th anniversary of Mann's birth), the TUM Center for Culture and Arts, together with the Thomas Mann Forum Munich e.V., invited participants to take part in a unique interdisciplinary project. The focus was on Thomas Mann's commitment to democracy and his courageous resistance to National Socialism—and what we can learn from this in the “scorched landscape” of our present day.

The project was held under the patronage of Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and comprised five interlinked components:

  • an exhibition in the enrollment hall (December 8, 2025, to January 15, 2026) entitled “Thomas Mann – In the Burning Landscape of Democracy”
  • a scientific symposium
  • an accompanying publication
  • as well as the guest performance “The Magic Mountain: Expedition into the Present,” an immersive VR theater production
  • a supporting program

The entire project was funded by the Bavarian State Parliament and the TUM University Foundation.
